10 REASONS WHY THE S-CLASS IS STILL THE MOST INNOVATIVE CAR ON SALE

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has finally arrived, after a long marketing campaign full of teasers and sneak peeks. While initially believed to be an entirely new generation, this car actually still belongs to the model’s seventh generation, introduced in 2020. However, it brings several design and tech updates, keeping the S-Class at the forefront of innovation.

We have taken a look at everything we know about the new S-Class so far and came up with ten reasons why this iconic model has, once again, become the most innovative car on the market, even after decades of history. Equipped with the latest tech, advanced comfort and safety features, and high-performing, efficient powertrains, the S-Class is a jewel in Mercedes’ crown. Here are some of the new model’s most interesting features.

It Has An All-New Design... Well, Over 50% New

The S-Class may be a model with a long history, but it’s also one that constantly reinvents itself to stay ahead of the curve. More than 50% of the new S-Class (around 2,700 components) has been redeveloped or upgraded. It's the most comprehensive update to take place within a single generation of the model.

Among the new features we find a larger, illuminated grille, new headlights with micro-LED technology, and an optional illuminated Mercedes star on the hood. Illumination is a key component of the new S-Class’s design, creating a unique “light signature” that gives the car a premium feel both inside and out.

Taking Inspiration From A Luxury Concept

Some of the S-Class's design updates, such as the new grille, were borrowed from the Vision Iconic Conceptintroduced last year. This unique, retro-futuristic car takes iconic design elements from Mercedes’ past and reimagines them for the present day. The Art Deco era of the 1920s and '30s is a major source of inspiration for the Vision Iconic.

The oversized grille, which pays homage to Mercedes models from the brand’s history, is a crucial element of the concept’s design. The vehicle, however, is not just all about style, but also about state-of-the-art tech. It is equipped with features such as neural network computing, a solar-powered paint job that can generate electricity, and steer-by-wire functionality.

A Selection Of Three Powertrains

The new S-Class offers a selection of three powertrains. The base model in the lineup, the S 500, is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which produces 442 hp and up to 472 lb-ft.

There's also the S 580e that uses the same engine and adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain, for increased power and efficiency. This model produces 576 hp and 553 lb-ft. Finally, there's the S 580, which replaces the inline-six with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. This setup produces 530 hp and 556 lb-ft. For all three options, a nine-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels.

An Intelligent Suspension

The S-Class’s suspension is as high-tech as the rest of the car, with systems in place to provide the most comfortable ride possible. The Airmatic suspension is connected to the cloud, gathering data from other cars to optimize the ride.

Each car collects information regarding things such as potholes or speed bumps on a particular road, uploading it to the cloud, where the data gets stored for up to 14 days. This function enables other Mercedes vehicles equipped with the same system to “see” where the obstacles are, adapting their suspension settings in response to make it softer and glide over with ease.

A Supercomputer-Powered Infotainment System

The infotainment system on the new S-Class has supercomputer-level power at its heart, with the MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System) running the show. All of the vehicle’s tech features are integrated into this ecosystem, from driver assistance to Google Maps-powered navigation and everything in between. The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) interface appears on a large “Superscreen,” and features a virtual assistant powered by AI.

The MBUX Surround Navigation system provides 3D guidance with integrated traffic data, building a complete picture of the vehicle’s surroundings for ultra-precise navigation. Meanwhile, the MB.DRIVE system uses advanced sensors to provide high-quality driver assistance and safety features.

A Mobile Office For Getting Work Done On The Move

The passengers in the S-Class’s rear seats are just as well looked after as the ones in the front, with a host of comfort and luxury features that turn the rear of the cabin into a “boardroom on wheels." Dual 13.1-inch displays, individual rear seats, detachable remote controls, and integrated video conferencing features make it possible to do work on the move, making the most of time spent in the vehicle.

However, all these features can also be used for leisure purposes: the dual nature of the S-Class’s interior makes it well suited to both work and play.

Comfort Is A Top Priority

The new S-Class places the well-being and comfort of its occupants at the top of the priority list. Every detail has been given the highest level of attention, ensuring that the driver and passengers are as comfortable and safe as possible on every journey. One of the luxury features on offer are heated seatbelts, to keep everyone toasty while on the move.

Air quality inside the cabin is also crucial. A new, more powerful air filter has been installed in the new S-Class, along with a system called Energizing Air Control. This system uses smart sensors to track pollution levels both inside and outside the car. A feature called Digital Vent Control automatically adjusts air vents based on personalized ventilation profiles, thanks to the MBUX system's technology.

A Stylish AMG Line Package

An AMG Line Package is available for the 2027 S-Class, giving the car’s design a slightly more aggressive edge while maintaining its underlying elegance. The grille has a darker color, while the window surrounds are now sporting a gloss black finish. The side skirts have been replaced with more aggressive ones. The package also includes 21-inch wheels for a sportier overall feel.

The AMG Line Package balances the S-Class’s design with AMG’s rich heritage of performance, creating a vehicle that effortlessly blends luxury and sportiness. For drivers who don’t want to make the leap into owning a full-blown AMG model, but want a little more edge in their Mercedes, this package offers an appealing halfway point.

A Gradual Move Back To Physical Controls

Physical controls are gradually coming back to cars’ infotainment systems, as automakers realized things like capacitive touch buttons haven’t quite gained the public’s favor. Mercedes-Benz is no exception. The new S-Class is equipped with a physical scrolling button for volume control, allowing for a more intuitive experience, and a cruise control rocker switch.

Some elements, such as the steering-wheel buttons that operate infotainment or dash display functions, still use capacitive touch technology. The overall trend, however, is moving away from this type of button and back towards physical controls, which is a welcome change for most drivers.

Carrying Forward The Legacy Of A Major Innovator

The new S-Class is the latest member of a model family that has been bringing innovation to the automotive world for decades. Although the S-Class was officially introduced in the early 70s, a few earlier models, dating back to the early 50s, were retroactively associated with it. These cars were responsible for introducing major safety innovations such as the crumple zone and the safety door lock.

Later on, the S-Class continued to bring new features to cars all over the world by introducing ABS, the turbodiesel engine, electronic stability control, and the voice-controlled car phone, among other features. From tech to safety to performance, the S-Class has played a major role in the evolution of cars throughout the 20th century. The recently introduced model is set to continue that legacy, constantly pushing the limits of tech, design, and engineering.
